Protecting Your Skin by Type: A Guide to the Fitzpatrick Scale
Sun advice is often given as if everyone's skin behaved identically, but a fair, freckled complexion and deeply pigmented skin respond to ultraviolet light very differently. Dermatologists capture that difference with the Fitzpatrick scale, a six-point classification based on how your skin reacts to sun rather than on how it looks in a photograph. Knowing your type helps you protect yourself sensibly — without falling into the trap of thinking any type is off the hook.
The six types at a glance
- Type I: very fair skin, often with red or blonde hair and freckles. Always burns, never tans.
- Type II: fair skin, light eyes. Burns easily, tans minimally.
- Type III: medium skin. Sometimes burns, then tans gradually.
- Type IV: olive or light-brown skin. Rarely burns, tans easily.
- Type V: brown skin. Very rarely burns, tans darkly.
- Type VI: deeply pigmented dark-brown to black skin. Almost never burns.
The difference comes largely down to melanin, the pigment that absorbs and scatters UV. More melanin means more built-in protection and a longer time before skin reddens — but it never removes the need for care. Dermatology research expresses that difference in a figure called the minimal erythema dose, or MED — the smallest UV dose that produces a just-visible burn. A commonly cited midpoint for Type I skin is roughly a fifth of the dose that a Type VI would need to reach the same point, which is why the same afternoon in the sun plays out so differently for two people standing next to each other.
Where you sit on the scale
The scale was originally developed to gauge how skin would react to UV treatment in dermatology clinics, and it's still used that way today — to judge, for instance, how cautiously to dose a light-based treatment. For everyday sun-safety purposes, though, placing yourself on it doesn't require a clinical visit: the practical questions are simply how your skin has actually responded to sun exposure in the past — do you burn before you tan, tan without burning, or almost never react at all — and, secondarily, your natural, never-tanned skin colour and whether you have red or blonde hair and freckles, all of which correlate with lower types. It's a description of a tendency, not a precise measurement, and plenty of people sit between two types or react differently on different parts of the body (a forearm that's seen a lifetime of casual sun usually behaves differently from a normally-covered shoulder).
Fair skin (Types I–II): the highest burn risk
If you burn easily and tan poorly, the sun gives you the least margin for error. Your priority is avoidance and barriers: seek shade at the sun's peak, wear broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher and reapply it diligently, and lean on hats, sunglasses, and UPF clothing. Because Types I and II do not tan meaningfully, chasing colour is simply chasing damage — there is no version that ends well. On the site's own Tan Session Time Estimator, entering Type I or II skin returns an explicit note that there is no session length that produces a safe tan for that skin — the tool is honest about that rather than suggesting a number anyway.
Medium skin (Types III–IV): easy to underestimate
These types tan more than they burn, which can breed a false sense of safety. You can still burn on a high-UV day, and the cumulative damage that drives ageing and cancer accrues regardless of whether you redden. The same broad-spectrum sunscreen, shade, and cover-up habits apply; you simply have a little more time before a burn, not a pass. On the UV Index & Skin Type Protection Reference, Type III's unprotected burn-time column runs noticeably longer than Type I's at every UV band — but it never reaches "unlimited," and it shortens the same way at higher UV that every other type's does.
Deeper skin (Types V–VI): lower risk, not no risk
Richly pigmented skin has the most natural protection and the lowest overall rate of sun damage, and it deserves accurate information rather than either alarm or neglect. Two things are true at once. First, sunscreen and sun sense still matter: UV still contributes to uneven pigmentation, dark spots, and ageing, and skin cancers, though less common, do occur — and are too often diagnosed late, partly because both patients and clinicians can underestimate the risk. What everyone shares
Whatever your type, the core habits are the same: a broad-spectrum sunscreen of SPF 30 or higher, applied generously and reapplied; shade during peak UV; a hat, sunglasses, and clothing when the index is high; and attention to any new or changing spot on your skin, which is a conversation for a dermatologist rather than a website. Fitzpatrick isn't the only factor, and it isn't perfect
The scale correlates with other traits — red or blonde hair, light eyes, and heavy freckling tend to cluster with the lower types, which is part of why those features are often used as quick, informal indicators. It's worth knowing the scale's history, too: it was developed in the 1970s originally to help judge dosing for a light-based psoriasis treatment, using a population that at the time skewed toward lighter skin tones, and the darker categories (V and VI) were added somewhat later to extend its range. Dermatology has since noted that the scale is a rough, self-reported approximation of UV sensitivity rather than a precise biological measurement, and it doesn't capture everything relevant to an individual's risk — family history and total lifetime sun exposure matter too, and neither shows up in a Fitzpatrick number.
Skin type and product choice
Fitzpatrick type doesn't just change how long you can safely stay in the sun — it's a reasonable input into which sunscreen format suits you, too. Fairer types, who need consistent daily coverage and often have more reactive skin, tend to do well with the immediate, generally gentle protection of a mineral filter (see chemical vs mineral sunscreen), while medium and deeper types layering sunscreen under makeup or wanting an invisible finish on more richly pigmented skin often prefer a chemical or tinted mineral formula specifically to avoid a white cast (see that same comparison for how tinted formulas address this). Neither preference is about protection level — a correctly applied broad-spectrum SPF 30+ protects any Fitzpatrick type equally well — it's about which formula you'll actually enjoy wearing enough to reapply consistently.
Type and UV index together
Skin type and UV index interact multiplicatively, not independently, which is easiest to see in a single fixed scenario: at UV index 6 (bottom of "High"), unprotected estimated burn time runs from about 27.8 minutes for Type II skin, to about 33.3 minutes for Type III, to about 111.1 minutes for Type VI — a fourfold spread, at the exact same UV index, from skin type alone. That's the whole reason every calculator on this site asks for skin type as an input rather than assuming one figure fits everyone: the UV physics is identical for all six types, but the outcome for a given exposure time genuinely is not.
Why "I never really burn" isn't the same as "I'm not at risk"
Higher Fitzpatrick types are defined by how rarely they visibly burn, and it's an easy, understandable step from there to treating "I don't burn" as "sun exposure doesn't affect me." The two aren't the same claim. Erythema — the visible reddening a burn produces — is just one signal of UV damage, and it's the signal that happens to be least reliable in exactly the skin types that need it least for day-to-day comfort but arguably benefit most from a reminder that it isn't the only measure that matters. UV-related skin cancer and photoaging in higher Fitzpatrick types occur without the person necessarily having a memorable history of visible burns behind them, which is precisely why "I never burn" shouldn't be read as an all-clear signal on its own.

None of the type-by-type nuance above changes the baseline habits: a broad-spectrum sunscreen of SPF 30 or higher, applied generously and reapplied on schedule; shade during peak UV hours; a hat, sunglasses, and clothing when the index runs high; and a dermatologist's eye on any new or changing spot on your skin, regardless of type. The scale changes how urgently and how quickly the sun affects a given person — it never changes whether sun protection is worth doing.
