How Much Sunscreen Each Body Area Actually Needs
You've probably heard the shot-glass rule: about 30–35 millilitres of sunscreen for a full adult body, per application. It's a good rule, and it's a real improvement over guessing. But it treats the body as one lump figure, and in practice you're not applying sunscreen to "the body" — you're applying it to a face, two arms, a torso, and two legs, usually in that order, and it's easy to run generous on the parts you think about first and thin on the parts you cover last. This piece breaks the shot glass down by region, using the same rule-of-nines math and the same numbers the site's own Sunscreen Amount Calculator uses.
The rule of nines, adapted for sunscreen
Burn units and sunscreen dosing borrow the same underlying idea from emergency medicine's "rule of nines," which splits an adult body into regions that are each roughly 9%, or a multiple of 9%, of total surface area. The calculator's regions, and the share of total body surface area each represents, are:

Those five figures add up to 99%, not 100 — the remaining 1% is the genital region, left out of a general sunscreen calculation. Note how much of the total sits below the waist: legs and feet alone make up more surface area than the face, neck, and both arms combined, which is exactly why "I did my face, arms, and chest" so often leaves the legs seriously under-covered on a beach day.
What each region needs, worked out
The calculator applies the standard SPF-testing density — 2 milligrams per square centimetre — to an average adult body surface area of 1.8 square metres, then converts the result into grams, teaspoons (1 tsp ≈ 5 g of lotion), and "shot glasses" (≈ 30 g). Here's what that produces, one region at a time, for a single application:

Notice that front torso, back and shoulders, and both legs each land on exactly the same figure — 12.96 grams, about two and a half teaspoons — because each of those is 18% of body surface area (legs are 36%, but the calculator's per-application figures scale proportionally, so a single 18%-sized region and a "half" of the 36% leg region come out identical). If you're mentally budgeting sunscreen by "handfuls," it helps to know that your torso front, your torso back, and your legs each deserve roughly the same-sized handful — not the small dab many people give the legs after being generous up top.
A realistic partial-coverage example
Not every application covers the whole body — a lot of real-world sunscreen use is "face, neck, and arms" before a walk, or "everything the swimsuit doesn't cover" before a swim. Face and neck plus both arms — a common combination for anyone dressed for anything other than swimming — works out to 4,860 cm² of skin, 9.72 grams, or about 1.94 teaspoons per application. That's a useful number to keep in mind for a quick top-up that isn't a full-body reapplication.
A full day multiplies the total, not the density
Reapplying doesn't change how much you need per application — it multiplies the same amount by however many times you apply it. A whole-body application repeated three times across a day (a reasonable count for a beach day with a midday and late-afternoon top-up) comes to 106.92 grams of sunscreen total, or roughly 3.5 fluid ounces — more than a third of a standard 200 mL bottle, for one person, in one day. Why the numbers don't just add up to "more is better"
None of this is an argument for slathering on sunscreen indiscriminately — it's an argument for hitting the tested density evenly, region by region, rather than "more" in the places you think about and "some" in the places you don't. A thick layer on your chest doesn't compensate for a thin one on your calves; each region needs its own full coat. The two-coat method — one pass, a minute to settle, then a second full pass everywhere — is the most reliable way to get every region, not just the ones you remember first, up to the density these numbers assume.

What a full day of reapplication adds up to, region by region
The whole-body total for three applications — 106.92 grams, covered above — splits across regions in the same proportions as a single application, just scaled up. Both the front and back torso and both legs, at 18% and 36% of body surface respectively, would each need roughly 38.88 grams (about 7.8 teaspoons) across three applications; face and neck would need about 9.72 grams (roughly 1.9 teaspoons) across the same three applications. Seeing it broken out this way makes clear why the legs, which people often reapply less carefully than the face, actually carry the largest single reapplication burden of any region across a full day.
The region the rule of nines doesn't separately call out: the scalp
The "face & neck" region in the table above covers the face and neck skin, but hair-covered scalp isn't broken out as its own line item the way it is in some clinical burn-surface-area charts, largely because how much scalp is actually exposed varies enormously with hair coverage from person to person. For anyone with a thinning crown, a short haircut, or a deliberately shaved head, that exposed scalp skin should be treated like any other bare-skin region: it needs the same 2 mg/cm² density as the face, either from a lotion worked through to the skin or from a spray formulated for scalp use, and it's one of the areas people most reliably forget precisely because it isn't on most people's mental list of "skin" in the same way a forearm obviously is.
What this calculation deliberately leaves out
The rule-of-nines regions used here total 99%, not 100% — the remaining 1% is the genital region, which a general sunscreen calculator like this one leaves out rather than trying to size for swimwear coverage that varies enormously from person to person and outfit to outfit. Sunscreen sticks on these same regions
If you're using a stick rather than a lotion for any of these regions — common for the face, ears, or scalp — the same area figures still apply, but the number of firm passes needed to actually deliver that much product goes up, since a stick deposits far less per swipe than a lotion spreads per squeeze. Turning this into a shopping estimate
If you're planning sunscreen for a family trip, this region breakdown turns into a rough shopping list: multiply your group's total whole-body-equivalent grams per day (using each person's own body size and how many applications you expect) by the number of days, then divide by roughly 200 grams per standard bottle to get a bottle count. It will very likely be a bigger number than instinct suggests — which is exactly the point of doing the arithmetic instead of guessing.
